Dichterliebe

Each season, ASC presents a series of intimate Lieder Lounge performances, highlighting some of the most exciting artistic champions of art song. These recitals often focus on a theme, set of composers, or ideas the artists want to explore on an intimate recital stage.

Internationally-acclaimed mezzo-soprano Samantha Hankey and celebrated pianist Myra Huang offer a new perspective on Robert Schumann’s, Dichterliebe, asking: why can’t a woman sing these poems? Schumann’s seminal song cycle forms the center of a program that explores broader themes of identity through Francis Poulenc’s 3 Songs by Lorca, as well as a lighter second half of cabaret.

Hankey, a rising star on recital stages worldwide, recently made her debuts at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and London’s Wigmore Hall. Huang, a two-time Grammy nominee and Head of Music for the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, has appeared with Art Song Chicago several times, most recently in 2021.
