SONGS OF THE EARTH
For 15 years, our season has begun with the Collaborative Works Festival - an annual celebration of art song performance explored through one topic, theme, or idea. Over several concerts, this theme is explored by some of the most exciting interpreters of art song.
This year’s festival programs chart a progression: from communion with nature, to contemplation of its power, to a reckoning with our impact upon it. These concerts are offered as an invitation to listen closely, to notice what has changed, and to consider what kind of relationship with the natural world we hope to leave behind.
We are thrilled to add two public events to this season’s Festival that immerse audiences, artists and students in our theme, song, environmental awareness and more.

On Thursday, September 24 at 5:00pm in Roosevelt University’s storied Sullivan Room, we are delighted to host a panel discussion exploring the intersection of the arts and climate activism, featuring Kirsten Hedegaard of the EcoVoice Project and Mike Bryson, author of Visions of the Land and Professor and Director of Sustainability Studies in Roosevelt University's College of Humanities, Education, and Social Sciences, in conversation with Artistic Director Nicholas Phan.
Friday at 2:00pm in Ganz Hall, we host our partners at Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts for a masterclass exploring song with Festival artist, soprano Raquel González. We invite you to hear the acclaimed soprano as she works with pianist and singer duos from Roosevelt’s vocal performance and piano programs.
